The Blue Helmets: A Review of United Nations Peacekeeping
In 1988, after 40 years of contributing to the maintenance of international peace and security, the peace-keeping forces to the UN were awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. In that year and in 1989, five new operations - in Afghanistan-Pakistan, Iran-Iraq, Angola, Namibia and Central America - illustrated the diverse roles which can be performed by UN peace-keeping operations.
This book contains accounts of all the 18 peace-keeping operations which have been set up by the UN since the first military observer group in the Middle East in 1948. Eight of them are in the field today and others are being actively planned.
